Coming from faraway lands, European hardwood floors are anything but typical.
Compared to their American counterparts, these floors give any space a standout style. Different species of trees produce their own distinct types of wood. Ready to spruce up your space? Let’s talk about European hardwood floors.
European hardwood originates from countries like England, France and Germany. This imported wood has a luxurious aesthetic and comes in many varieties. Its most noticeable characteristic is the distinct wavy patterns in the wood. There are several factors that convince people to choose European hardwood floors. The biggest benefits include:
Newer spaces favor a modern look. European hardwood floors have cool grains, which give them a unique look. Whether you choose walnut, birch or white oak, your space will look clean and contemporary.Generally, European hardwood floors come from harder trees than their counterparts. They are less likely to show scratches and gouges early on in their life span.
Do you tend to spill things frequently? If you do, these floors will come to your rescue because they’re easy to wipe and clean. The low maintenance nature can be a lifesaver if you’re clumsy. Light tones make a room look larger, while darker tones do the opposite. These floors are versatile and come in several shades. From light gray to reddish tones, there’s something for everyone. European hardwood floors are also easy on the wallet. If you shop around, you can get the floor of your dreams for the perfect price. Elegant floors are affordable when you figure out where they come from and how much you need.
There are multiple ways to install European hardwood floors. However, floating is the most popular method.
Your contractor will begin by fully gluing the grooved sides of the planks. The first row is used as a work line. As additional rows of flooring are added, planks are staggered to create a distinct pattern. The planks fit together like pieces of a puzzle. Straps are used to keep the boards in place until the glue dries to avoid damaging the finish.
Because these floors are installed over plywood subfloors, there are other ways to secure the planks.
Gluing down the planks is fairly straightforward. Your contractor will add adhesive to the floor with a trowel and create a small section for the first row. The second row will fit into the tongues of the first one and will be tapped into place. The process is repeated in the following sections and the last row’s planks are typically cut to fit.
Your floor can also be nailed down. Holes are drilled into the first set of planks to secure them against the wall. The boards are then nailed down through the tongue in each passing row. Finally, your contractor will countersink rows in the middle and the final rows are face nailed.
