Your contractor starts with measuring and trimming. The part you step on (tread), the back part of the step (riser), and the length and width of the stairs are measured and trimmed to size.

First, frame parts called stringers are added to each side and the middle of each step. Then the risers are hammered with two nails into each one. Finally, a pin set thumps the nails deep into the hardwood.

Next, the treads are laid flat and perpendicular to the riser. Your contractor will apply wood adhesive under and on the sides of the risers and clean off any excess glue.

Your contractor will add a balustrade, which are railings braced by wood or steel supports. They keep you safe and add aesthetic value.

Lastly, your contractor will sand and your hardwood stairs. The process has a specific order. Your contractor will work on the balustrades, then the treads, risers and stringers. Then the stairs are cleaned, stained and finished.
