Open up your space this season with light hardwood floors

Feeling cramped is never fun, so naturally, you want your room to look bigger. Light hardwood floors may be the solution you need.

People choose these versatile floors for a plethora of reasons. Let’s learn more about light hardwood floors and their many benefits.

What is light hardwood?

There are several types of light hardwoods, including red oak, white oak and white maple. No matter the color you choose, you’ll notice the planks tend to have smooth graining and may be soft or hard. There are many reasons to choose beautiful light hardwood flooring, some of the most popular include:

  • Makes spaces look bigger
  • Signs of dirt hard to notice
  • Quick cleaning
  • Simple to decorate

As mentioned earlier, light hardwood floors make spaces look larger than they are. Since the floors reflect light easily, any room will seem brighter and create the illusion of more space.

Light hardwood floors aren’t hard to maintain. Dust and dirt take longer to show than they do on dark hardwood floors because it blends in more.

Much like their counterparts, these hardwood floors are easy to clean. Mopping, sweeping and vacuuming will do the trick. However, you should remember to take proper precautions like taking the brush roller off your vacuum and using minimal water when mopping.

You’ve heard the saying “white goes with anything”. Well, it’s true! Light hardwood floors come in several neutral tones. That means you can decorate your space in whatever style you want and the floors won’t clash with your furniture.

How are light hardwood floors installed?

There are a few ways to install light hardwood floors. The process isn’t any different from any other hardwood floor. The planks can be nailed down or glued down.

The first option is the nail down method.

Your contractor creates a chalk line by the wall to determine where to face nail the first row of planks. After face nailing, the boards are blind nailed into place. After the first row is in place, subsequent rows are connected by attaching the grooves and end tongues. This process is repeated in the following rows. The last row will need to be rip sawed to leave a gap between the floor and the wall.

Light hardwood floors can also be glued down.

Your contractor will apply a flooring adhesive to your floor to prevent it from expanding and contracting from heat and humidity. The glue is spread with a notched trowel. Then the planks are put on the floor in rows, starting at the longest wall. They are pushed together like puzzle pieces and secured with straps until the glue dries.

Both methods work well with light hardwood floors. Ask your contractor about the best type of installation for your space. The experts tend to know best.
