How are Runners Installed?

Let's review how runners are installed on stairs. Here's what you should expect on installation day. Your contractor will begin with measuring and cutting a piece of carpet to the correct length. They will then mark the location on each step where the runner will rest.

Next, a piece of padding will be cut, placed, and secured onto each step. The carpet will be rolled, laid a few steps above the bottom, and pulled towards the bottom.

Now, your contractor will run a row of staples along the bottom of the bottom rise where the carpet meets the floor. The carpet will then be pulled tight and a row of stairs will be run along the top of the rise where it meets the tread of the stairs.

Then your contractor will use a knee kicker to pull the carpet tight as they place another row of staples in the concern between the riser and the tread. Next, a stair tool will be used to wedge the carpet into the corner between the tread and the riser.
